Hello all, sorry if this has already shown up elsewhere as I am a newcomer. I have a Mariner 9.9
Serial# 682 CS 019050 Can anyone tell me what year it is? I want to order some parts for it.
It runs very well but I do get water in the lower unit. The seals look to be OK but I did notice a couple of small breather holes? in the lower unit approx 3/16" dia are these supposed to be plugged with something or? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Andrew
P.S. The motor also says Made in Japan on it,does that mean it is really a Yamaha?

That is a 1980, Yamaha built (for Mercury) "C" model Mariner.

The Yami/Mariners were 100% carbon copies of earlier Yamaha models that had often been discontinued and your particular serial makes it old enough that it no longer even shows up on Merc's active parts listings (oldest one they have are for 1982 models).

That doesn't mean there is no parts, you may just have to search for them with a slightly newer serial.

Certain Mariner models were very prolific in North America, but this was not one of them, which may leave with no other source for parts other than Mercury or a very limited used market. Aftermarket companies often didn't bother making parts for some of these because the demand just wasn't great enough to make it viable for them.

Sorry, missed part of your question. Those holes are to drain water from the lower exhaust housing so that it doesn't crack in the event of a freeze up.

If you have water in the lower it will be because you have at least one bad seal somewhere.

There are little seals (washers) on the fill and drain plugs, seals under the water pump base, a seal where the shift shaft enters the lower plus a propshaft and bearing carrier seal - any of those could be letting the water in.

You can have the unit pressure tested to try and find the offender and then install the seals as necessary. Unlike many models there does not appear to be an entire kit listed for this one, so the seals/o-rings are available individually from a Merc dealer.
