i have a 1974 merc 650 3 cylinder and theres a strong burnt smell in my distributor and it won't spark and i have a guy that said he would give me a distributor from a 1974 merc 850 but its a 4 cylinder he said they look like they're the same size would i beable to put my cap (if it fits) on the one for the 85 hp and make it work to feed 3 cylinders or would it cause more problems in the long run?

Correct. You can you do it by removing the 4 banger distributor shaft and replacing it with your 3 cylinder item. DO not try to pry the rotor off for it's bonded on!

Jeff

PS: The optical sensor in your distributor is fried.

I have a 69 merc 1250 inline w/a thunderbolt ignition. My problem is that I only get spark when the key is just turned and released. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so what is the solution to solve. Thank you.

Yeah. You could disconnect the wires and jumper the ignition ON circuit.

Unfortunately, yes: the sparkbox. There's one on eBay at the moment.
