i just bought a boat with a 60 hp mariner on it. i found that you have to remove the kill wire from pack to make unit run. would that be the stator or trigger bad? also unit runs about 15-20 minutes then dies, i have a water muff on unit but no water coming out just below motor. i assume that the water pump is out and that temp is shutting down unit. could you enlighten me on these issues please.

The kill wire goes to the key. I would start there. Nothing wrong with the stator.

i took boat to lake and put in water and got started. let run for about 15 minutes and motor stopped. flywheel will only turn 1 complete revolution and stop now. pulled plugs and pistons are moving, can also put motor in gear and turn 1 revolution by prop. did notice that the plug covering the flywheel nut melted. i feel that there is a cooling problem but what could have caused the motor to lock like that. i work on diesels but boat motors are a whole different ballgame.
