I was out in my toon fishing..got there fine, decided to leave cove and turnt the key and nothing. All accesories work...plenty of juice in battery, I move the throttle to make sure it was in gear...after pushing it a bit far the motor cranked NO PROBLEM. I have a quicksilver console lever. Has this happened to anyone before? Also do you think I could take apart and make sure things are tight on it? Or do you think I am going to have to spend around 200 to replace this one? Any thoughts would be great! thanks

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is getting sticky/shot.

Designed so you can not start in gear and pitch yourself overboard if the boat lurches.

It can be replaced on most models - the hardest part is sometimes finding a diagram for the control itself.

Your best bet is to try and locate a model number for the control or take a good picture of it and head over to a Merc dealer and see if they can help you out.

Graham, thanks for the help...I figured thats what it was....but last time i tried diagnosing problems on my boat I was WAY off basis. Thanks for the heads up I will take your advice and we can go from there. On a second note, IF I was in a cove....and I had nobody to tow me back...is there an option that will get me back to the docks? Thanks!

check the control cable rigging, binding of a cable could prevent the throttle from being in the happy place for the switch rigging. I would also wonder if the lower unit was off recently, perhaps rev lock binding....

Thanks, but I haven't had the lower unit off. The impeller was replaced(whole kit) and the lower unit oil was changed(yrly). I am going to go to boat...and tighten then the cables and make sure everything is where it wants/needs to be. The safety switch is only 25.00 from the local marine shop. So at least it isn't crazy expensive.

there is more to rigging cables then just tightening, if you don't have a manual leave it along. Changing the waterpump requires removing the lower unit, its possible the shop installed it wrong, unlikely but possible. Just throwing out other ideas why the switch might not work correctly.

Hi Shane,

My previous rig has this switch removed due to marine use / requirments. Apparently, ocean going boaters pull them as they need to be able to start a stalled motor without having to throttle back. As Graham said, it's there for a reason.

I replaced my one with an off-the-shelf micro switch from a local electronics parts store. Cost about $2. It can be tricky to open the internals, so be careful and try to do the job on the same day when the memory is still fresh... Should take an hour or two at most. I am, of course, assuming the switch is in the throttle control unit. Mine was a Quicksilver 2000, if memory serves me right.

Good luck!
