Just got the boat out for '08 and runs good. When docking it would not shift back to neutral. Tried removing large phillips screws on shifter face plate and they turn but wont back out. Suspect trouble is in lower unit, not the shifter anyway. Is this a mechanic job or can I get at problem down below? Once a mech. told me some motors have to be attacked from the top down. All I have is weekend. |

Hi there!
Remove the shift cable first.
Check shifter action on cable termination under load. Might be that control box has slip and won't shift properly. If that seems ok, move on...
Make sure that the shifter linkage on the motor will engage neutral, reverse and forward, Twist the prop to see that you're engaging the gears. If not, problem could be in lower unit, bad release spring, mucky oil or a shaft that has stuck.
If you're going to strip the lower end, replace the impellor and lube for good measure.
Lastly, always store the boat in forward gear, this takes the tension off the spring in lower unit. Make sure that motor won't be started accidently...
