I just bought a mercury 6hp and the engine is running well but the throttle control arm is very hard to turn. It almost feels as if there was a powerful spring kicking back when I try to keep it on high or fast speeds. Also, I don't see any water being released from the bottom of the motor head. Where should I be looking to make sure the impeller is working? Serial number is 38277..there may be a 91 in front but is isn't very clear. I appreciate any comments.

if the tiller arm is pulling the engine to one side when under way the trim tab on the lower unit needs to be adjusted, move it right if the boat turns right. some older engines only discharge water through the prop. best to change the $20 waterpump every 2 years than cook the engine

Ray, the 6 horse Mercs were introduced in 1986 as part of the "new" 6/8/9.9/15 horse series.

First off, let's figure out what you have here.

Take the hood off, and standing behind the motor, look on the waterjacket on the right hand side (near where the plugs are) for a small silver disk about the size of a quarter. The serial will be stamped there (see pic which is a little OMC but the Mercs are similar).

If you have your throttle control in the tiller handle (twist to put in gear and control throttle) there could be one of a few issues causing what you describe - but let's figure out what you have first off...

Actually Ray, I should have said "re-introduced". Merc produced a 6 horse for a couple years in the early 1960's....
