im looking at buying this 1988 skeeter bass boat.. its motor is a 1988 175 merc outboard.. the seller tells me this

" I do want you to know I had the lower end rebuilt on the motor and they welded the bearing in, that means you would have to get a new lower case if you ever had to work on it. It has only been taken out 5 or 6 times since they rebuilt it, so I don't expect any problems for a long time, all the lines and hoses were just replaced also , I have all the paper work and all the work that has been done to it also, we can go to the boat shop and talk to them so you know what is what, if you want"

should i reconsider buying this boat? 4,500$ he wants

im not really sure what is meant when he says the lower end case bearing are welded in

im very new to boats/boat motors

any help would be great, thanks

jeff

Jeff, if the boat is in decent shape and the motor is running well, the price sounds decent - if it's sitting on a trailer as well.

You should enquire as to exactly what was welded - my guess would be that perhaps he is making reference to the bearing carrier in the lower unit - but that is just a guess...

thanks for the reply

ya he was talking about the lower case.. this is what he told me when i asked about it

"I bought the boat with a loose bearing and could not get the seller to come forward about the problem . I could have rebuilt the bottom of the motor, but Eric said he could fix it just as good, if I would let him, so I did"

Well, he is right about 1 thing, you will never repair it again or change the seals if it's welded.

So you need to factor that into the price if you are going to go ahead with the purchase.

Personally, I have never had to replace a shaft seal on a motor that I have owned - but always run in fresh water and I store my motor inside during the winter. But if this motor ever blows a seal then you are looking at another lower end.

That can run you 500 bucks or more (used) for that particular motor....
