I just bought a 1978 Del Magic 16ft deck boat with a 1978 115 hp Mercury. Engine runs outstanding and starts up fast every time. Last night I took it out for some late night fishin and never made it out from the slip. When I put in and went to lower the outboard into the water, all I heard was a strong clicking noise coming from near the battery and distributor area. The lowering switch is the older 3 button rig where you have to push the middle and lower button to operate it.

I had this problem once before but I waited a couple minutes and it started working. I checked all the wires from the switch and they seem to be fine. I changed batteries to see if the battery was just dead but still got the same clicking noise. I know there is a relief valve that should enable me to lower it manually but I couldnt get it to lower even when I loosened that thumb knob. Needless to say, no fishing last night.

I am not a technical wizard so please keep advise simple if you have any.

my email is paulrogers814@hotmail.com if you want to shoot me an email.

this normally indicates a dead spot in the pump motor, taping it with something might get it going. You need to check for power at the pump to verify. You could also rotate the up/down relays to see if that changes things. Link for picture, part 3 and 5 in the hydrolic pump and control

i tried tapping the pump motor with no results. found a bad wire to the micro switch, replaced and still doesnt work. as i kept tinkering with it, the solenoid that raises the tilt stopped clicking. im starting to think its that solenoid and or the pump motor thats bad. any suggestions?

you need a multi meter to check for power at the pump. Without it thee is only limited guess work to be done. If you think the up or down relay is bad then swap them, if it suddenly goes up and not down or vise versa, you know the problem is in the relay. If you have a meter, ask the pump to move, check for voltage at the pump, if you have voltage then the pump motor is at fault.
