I own a 2002 EFI 150 Merc and runit on a Skeeter 186 bassboat. I purchased the boat/motor new in 02' and for the past three seasons I have been experiencing the overheat alarm sounding off intermittenly. In the beginning it would only happen during hole shots, but after $2,000 in repairs replacing the waterpump, thermostats, sensors, alternator, ignition, and lower unit flushed I am still having an issue. Now the alrm sounds off various times while on the water to include after running it for a while and bringing it into the dock it sounds off at idle and wont stop unless I turn the motor off. After three boat shops working on it, one in which was a "Master Marine" mechanic and $2,000 later it's still not fixed. Any good expereinced Merc technicians with advice on where to go from here is greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks in advance.

I am not an expert Jeff, but I believe it helps maintain water pressure at higher rpms. They have rebuild kits for them, ( I think I may need one too). Is there any chance the motor is too high ( jack plate) or trimmed up too much during running. Also check your speedometer pick-up and transducers to see if they are diverting water from the lower unit. Just a guess. I would, and I did, put a temp gauge and water pressure gauge on the motor, never hurts to know what happening while your running and they are cheaper than a motor.

Jeff, at about 1500 rpms and below the water pressure in the head is usually somewhere between about 4 and 9 psi.

At that point the cooling for the motor is the job of the thermostats.

Above 1500 rpms pressure from the waterpump increases and the thermostats are pretty much bypassed. The poppet valve works to control how fast the cooling water passes through the motor.
They function until the water pressure exceeds 12 psi (or there abouts) at which point water is basically pumping through as quick as it can to keep the powerhead cooled.

A heat alarm at idle is usually the thermostats - upwards to almost full throttle, the poppet - at wide open - bad impeller, blockage, build-up etc....

As always, it could be a bad sensor as well. They are built fairly cheap and work on simple resistance...
