My serial # is A174331. I believe I seized it yesterday. I have rebuilt one other 2 stroke engine, which came out of a jet ski. Is it worth re-building, or would it be more economical to buy a remanufactured powerhead? Thank you for your help! |

Rich, to start with your motor is a 1985 model - great little motors with an outstanding ignition system. Depending on what damage was done you may or may not be able to rebuild this. Merc never sold an oversized piston/ring for this model - It wasn't meant to be bored or even honed for that matter. Later models of these "headless" split blocks were chrome plated and could not be machined at all. So really, you need to tear it down and see what went on you. If the cylinders themself are ok, Merc used to sell complete piston kits (piston/rings/pin/bearings) for just over a 100 bucks a pop (merc part number 767-9104A3) with new roller bearings going for about 25 bucks a set. Even if you toasted a rod (about 150 bucks) you could still do a total rebuild for around 500 dollars... |
