Hey everyone,

I have a 2000 Mercury EFI 250. I started noticing that everytime I would hit some chop the engine would suddenly lose power and drop about 1,000rpm. I kept riding around and then it would just randomly lose power abruptly. Then I couldn't take the ending to more than 1700rpm without it abruptly losing power. I took it to a mechanic and they said it was a short in the connection between the ignition harness and the ignition ECU that had melted part of the ignition harness plug due to water that had gotten in there. I changed the ignition harness. Took the boat out and it ran fine for about 30-45 minutes. Then the whole sequence started again. It would abruptley lose power when I hit chop and then it got to a point where i couldn't take it to more than 1700rpm without it losing power. It only does this while under load and when it loses power and drops the rpm it comes right back up and then loses again etc. If the engine is out of gear or out of the water it does not do this. Any ideas on what else it could be?

Thanks,

Felix

Junk in the VST will do that.

I just answered my own question with a little research. It's the vapor seperator tank. Where is that located on this engine?

Thanks for the help

i am having the exact same problem with my 2001 Mercury Optimax 225, did cleaning the VST or getting a new one solve the problem?
