Clunking at idle goes away around 150...

1998 mercury optimax dfi clunking noise from bottom of engine where lower unit meets powerhead motor runs fine has good compression and spark clunking goes away after 2000rpm goes in and out of gear fine happend after a hard 10min run at 5500rpm

remove lower unit drain plug and check magnet or fluid for metal.

metal in the oil and on the drain plug can not beleave all that noise was coming from the lower unit it sounded like the motor had came apart inside

that noise travels right up the drive shaft and out the top, sorry for your loss. Be sure to have LU pressure tested after repair

can't help you there, must find out what went wrong. I would think rebuilding would be better as long as the case is good. Hopefully it won't be too bad. To new for ebay

thanks for the help i took off the lower unit and hooked the water supply up top and fired up the motor and idled smooth with no sounds like before.
what connects the crank to the lower unit drive shaft?

the drive shaft has splines that go into the inside of the crankshaft end, or at least it use to.

it was the lower drive shaft pion bearing it was in peaces luckley the needles did't fall into the gears
and cause a lot more damage. at least the gears
look good along with every thing else seems to be a pretty cheap fix considering what could have happend
