Im removing a 83 XL shaft from my craft and replacing with a 89 L shaft hoping to use gearbox from the 83 on the 89.. Removed the XL gearbox but spacer between gearbox & mid section wont seperate, How is this held in place? Are there hidden fastenings? If anyone could shed some light on whatever else is involved or is this a job best left to experts? may have problem with shift rod & impeller tube, are they interchangable? HELP |

Mo, Those two LU should interchange, if they are both inlines or V6s. (I do not think you can swap inline LUs to V6 LUs and back) I changed my '93 135V6 from an XL to a L, using the LU off a '86 150V6. The spacer on my '93 was not seperately bolted to the midsection or gearbox. The long studs on the midsection and gearbox went thru the hollow spacer. The water tube on my '93 had a 5" extension that I removed. The shift rod and driveshaft stayed wth their gearcases. I needed to change the two studs on the midsection. I used the studs off a junk '73 Merc 850, since they were the same length and size. |
