thanks for all the replies on previous posts, how do you remove the bolts to a 90hp,v4,1988 evinrude,no room for a socket, rim round bolts makes spanner come off and there seems no room to withdraw the bolts when undone...is it me? |

Sorry to say, but yes, it is you. It is room ,but you need the right tools. You will not be able to pull the screws out, but leave them in the thermostat housing and 'wiggle' it out. Be careful with the springs. A 'naughty' way if you damage the screw heads and need to press on a mm socket(!), drill a hole in the lower cover from the back and cover it later with a rubber plug! |

try a smaller drive socket 3/8 or 1/4 the right one will go thru the 2 holes in the rear of the engine, keep a wrench in your back pocket. go slow and dont get pissed off,it can be frustrating. |

You can remove the bolts that hold the lower cowl in place which drops the lower cowl enough to give you some working space. As Mort said if the 7/16 heads are rusty try a metric like 10mm |

not to answer my own question ,but for the want of the risk of bolts snapping ,stripping down part of the engine just to check if} thermostats are working ,ive chickend out and bought an infared thermoniter for £6.00 |

Then check that you have even temp on both cylinder banks. If not - start praying! |
