I am looking at buying a 1978 Johnson 70hp motor and controls for $500. The top end has no problems but bottom end has a shifting problem. If you adjust to go easily into reverse it is hard to go into foward. If adjust for foward hard to get into reverse. Is the motor worth $500 and what is most likly problem with trans. Thanks

AS for Transmission in my trade it is anything that takes power from the engine/motor and takes it to the work.

Something to try befor stripping down the gearbox

Disconect the gear cable at the engine end...start the engine and move the gear lever at the engine into forward and reverse if you get both gears i would say you have excessive lost motion in the control box.
