Hello:
I'm just now puttin back together my childhood outboard that has sat for nearly 30 years. I've had OMC outboard all my life, and this one is no exception...great little motor!
Can anyone though explain to me how the driveshaft seal complex works? I'm confused on how the brass washer thingy sits on top of the roll pin in the driveshaft and not get worn to death? I have a photo of the entire deal, so no worries there getting it back together and all. If someone can explain why all this is needed (i.e. seals and a big spring), I'd appreciate it!

Hi....it all spins together with the crankshaft. Kind of a funky set up, but it does work real well to seal crankcase. Just be sure to avoid ethanol fuel or any alcohol based additives. |
