I went for a ride today and it ran good for about 15 minutes. I stopped and idled for about 5 minutes. When I opened up the throttle and tried to plane I had hardly any power and it was missing. Backed off the throttle and it got me back to the ramp. It will rev and idle fine but put it in gear and under a hard load it starts missing and the power just drops off to nothing. Any help on where I should look first, I've never worked on an outboard before.... |

Maybe a bad spark plug....loaded up from idling. Does it have VRO? Are the plugs different color now? I like to start simple. |

VRO was bypassed by the dealer when I bought it new. I pulled the plugs and they look about the same. The bottom plug was a little darker but not bad.. |

I started at the carbs, found the fuel lines were cracked really bad and some fuel/oil laying under them. I guess since I've gone this far I'll try my hand at a carb rebuild kit. This motor sat for about a year without being run. I replaced the tank and quick connect fuel line and it ran fine in the yard. After 15 minutes under a load and then idle for 5 my problems started. Spark seems to be fine. Maybe some varnish or dirt broke loose and stopped the carbs up. I've never taken a carb apart before so wish me luck. Thank's for the idea's I'll post back after I try the carb refresh.. |
