Hey:
I'm a newbee to the board, so forgive me if these are dumb questions.

I can't get the lowerunit back on. I recently rebuilt the water pump after this motor has sat for 25 years, but I can't get the drive shaft to engage. I have it in gear to spin the drive shaft so that the roll pin goes into the grove, but it is hitting something about 1/2 inch short. Any tricks I'm missing? I'm thinking something must have come loose under the head when I pulled the lower unit? Time to remvove the powerhead?

Try this link...find your motor and use the gearcase diagram to see if you have everything in the proper order

Two things that have to line up.

The pin near the top of the drive shaft,#8 in THIS DIAGRAM has to line up with the slot in the housing.

And the splines on the top of the drive-shaft have to line up with the splines in the end of the crank shaft.

Try slowly turning the flywheel (easier if the plugs are out) until the splines line up.

I tried all of those things. Thanks, but nothing seemed to work. I have the 1969 OMC service manual, so that helps some with diagrams, although the descriptions are a bit weak to me.

I decided to pull the powerhead. Took 15 minutes, tops. I have an exhaust gasket, so thought what the heck.

Anyway, I notice some of the parts that on top of the drive shaft were knocked off. Perhaps when I lowered the lower unit? I don't know for sure that they didn't come off when I pulled the head. Anyway, now that it is off, I can clear some of the carbon off the exhaust port, etc.

I figure it is easier now to bolt up the lower unit and then put the head back. Is that correct?

I think you may find getting the water tube back into the water pump the problem

I thought that that might be the problem (water tube back into water pump, but I removed the grommet and it was indeed going in all the way.

Oh well, head is off, so we'll go that route for now...stay tuned!
