Good evening,
I am looking at a boat with a 2001 Johnson Ocean Pro 175 but remember reading about some production problems when OMC went under. .
What year (s) did Johnson have the engine problems? Are there issues i should check out?

Thank you.

Most of the production problems were associated with the Evinrude Ficht engines. That isn't to say that Johnson was immune. I've got a 2000 Johnson 150. I haven't noticed anything too bad Quality wise. They did take a few shortcuts, like ty-wraps on the fuel lines rather than the plastic snap clamps like my 1985 90hp. Stuff like that is easy to fix though. The performance of my 150 is incredible!

I've cleaned carbs and replaced the water pump in my first year of owning it. The only manufacturer related "problem" I've had is that it uses a lot more gas than the 90.

Good information, thank you. I've heard another comment about his problems with a Ficht.

Another engine in the possible purchase arena is a 200 HP 2004 Evinrude with direct injection. I haven't been into it enough to know if is four or two cycle- guessing two.

Any flags to watch for on this one?

This is mounted on an off shore bracket that was added after market to a Glastron 22

Very substantial looking bracket but I'm not familiar with them. Trailering bounces could be a concern..... ??

200 HP 2004 Evinrude with direct injection

BRP product. No Worries. I'ts a clean 2 Stroke that will easily outperform most 4 strokes.

Got that, thanks. The Johnson powered boat has the lead at this time.

I'm still a little confused on the relationship between Evinrude/ Johnson and OMC back in 2001.

Any help with that?

Johnson and Evinrude were two of many brand names owned by OMC.
When OMC bellied ower, Bombardier bought the brand names in addition to certain factories, equipment etc, the never took over OMC.
But note that BRP as of today is not the Bombardier that bought out the remains of OMC.
A couple of years ago, it was set up a new company separated from the trains air crafts of whatever incorporated in the original Bombardier.
This new company is what is called BRP recreational and is totally separated from Bombardier even if the persons behind are partly the same.

Found out that the oil injectiono system was removed from the Johnson and I am not interested in mixing gas........ Wish I had known that up front.

Thanks for the input. We are getting an Arima with a 200 HP Honda- sure runs quietly.

Not sure if you pulled the trigger yet, but consider: Evinrude/Johnson, Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki all have substantially larger and better dealer networks than Honda. As the Honda outboard is essentially a car engine stood up on end, it is substantially heavier than even competing four-strokes. Likely 250+ pounds heavier than the DI two strokes.

It seems to me that Honda marine hasn't lived up to the great reputation earned by their automotive and other recreational products.

If the tank, wiring, and hoses are still around for the Johnson, it would just mean buying a new VRO pump and installing it to avoid mixing fuel. The pump is a couple hundred bucks though.
