i have a 1973 40hp evinrude model numbher 40355d and i was wondering how to see if water is flowing through the whole engine properly the input for water is right by the prop on the foot how do i tell if it is cooling the motor or not or even reaching the block

A quick check - Run it for a couple of minutes with the cowl off. The powerhead should be warm to the touch. Temps that make water Sizzle is too hot.
There are other ways but this one is pretty simple.

If you can leave your finger on it for an unlimited amount of time - it is good. Somebody sells the laser temp checker gun. Maybe Harbor Frieght? You just point the thing at the hot source - squeeze the trigger and a red beam point to the area it checks and reads on the scale visable to the operator.. A pistol looking thing. Sears probably has them too.

Yes but a boat motor should run at like 140deg.F so why would i be able to hold it on there for an unlimited amount of time? and does anybody know where the water i supposed to shoot out of to see if it is cooling
