I have a 175hp Johnson. The the three holes on the lower drive which draw in the water are broken. Is there an easy way to replace them or do I have to strip the complete lower drive assembly?

It is a 1985. There are three holes on the port side and three holes on starboard side. Looks like a a mess behind the holes. By removing the lower unit does that mean removing prop etc

prop can stay on .lower unit is bolted to the mid section, shift linkage is under carbs.
should drop down afer 6 bolts are removed.
that would be a good fix.you can suck up anything that will fit in the holes.

Hi Charles,
I have just had a look at the manual and I am correct in saying it is not an easy job to remove the lower gearcase and gain access to the screens. It looks like you would have to remove most of the inner workings to reach the intake screens. is this correct or have I miss understood the drawing?
Regards

Hi Charles,
Inner workings, all the gears and spindals that connect to the propeller. So if I just drop the gearcase then the intake holes are accessable without removing any other parts?
regards

Once you remove the gearcase from the midsection and take the water pump off, the filter screen will lift out the top. There is a small tab that catches on the top hole. if memory serves, the filter screen assembly has screens on the left and right, and the front and back are solid. the top and bottom are open. Kind of resembles the old box style cheese grater.

There is no need to gut the gearcase. Once you remove the water pump from the top of the gearcase, the "cheese grater" will be easily visible down in the intake channel. Just lift it out.

inner workings re: gearcase is not incorporated into the cooling system, just as jwb has explained
in the prior post ,just drop the gear case/pull water pump/replace as needed.
