Howdy folks.I just purchased a boat with a 1972 johnson 50 hp.it would idle but not run when you gave it some throttle.I checked the compression and had 125 on each cyl.I took the carbs off and soaked them and cleaned passages out with small strand of wire and blew them out and rebuilt them.I ran seafoam through the motor and cleaned it out.The motor was alittle hard to start but ran great after warm up.Had it out to the lake 2 times and it ran great. All asudden it started spitting gas out the front of the carbs (both)and puddling inside them. Its flooding my motor and gettting alot of smoke and running rough.Ive pulled the carbs off 2 times today taking them apart checking the float levels, checking for gime ect.and its still doing it.I also looked into the intake and the reed valves look new and very clean around them and ive checked my spark on both cylinders and im getting a great blue snappy spark about 1/2 long .Could my fuel pump be causing this.Any suggestions would very much be appreciated. |

That usually happens with bad reed valves. |

Thanks guys,i found out i had 3 problems. i took my carbs off and found one of the reeds has a chip in it.then i found a small hole in the fuel pump diafram (i know i cant spell lol)I fixed the feul pump and reeds and that help tremendously but it still wasnt as snappy as it should have been until i discovered the spring from the choke was hitting the butterfly linkage and keeping it from opening about a 1/8".My throttle response is whole alot snappier and runs awhole lot smoother. Once again Thanks........Michael |
