Bought boat last year, first boat, not too familiar with two strokes. Have the hardest time starting it, but when going, works great. Don't know if I am using too much choke or not working choke properly. I end up flooding the damned thing. Can anyone suggest the proper way to start the engine. Find that the engine starts better with it trimmed way up and I drop it as soon as it catches. Thanx.

just choke it till it fires then stop choke then crank ,should just fire up.(if there is nothing else wrong that is.)
trimmed all the way up you mean tilted in stored position?thats no good there is no water getting to the engine at the pick up in lower unit, till you get down, you will eat up the water pump that way,its made of rubber and needs water to luberacate it.

thanx, i will try that next time out. i will let you know how it works. I just learned this week that you have to press key in while cranking to have choke activate. Is this true. I just always lifted the lever which i assumed was a manual choke. Is this lever the choke or sort of a throttle while in neutral. thanx! dale.

That lever is simply a way to advance the throttle without putting the engine in gear, used to advance the throttle when needed such as cold starting the engine.

thats the warm up lever it allows you rev the engine while not in gear, and yes push the key to choke it,if the engine sounds like it wants to quit raise that lever a little until it gets warm.
