Hello,
I've been searching this forum all morning and have learned all kinds of good things. I'm having issues with a boat I bought last year. It has a rebuilt powerhead and new lower unit with standard gears, compression is good, Spark, Fuel all check out fine, carbs have all been rebuilt.

The motor is a V6 Evinrude VRO VE225TXEIC 22 foot walk around sea ox.
I have never been able to get the RPM’s up on the boat. I currently have a 13 x 15.5 prop on it and only get 3000 rpm.
I recently had a mechanic meet me at the lake. It was about 95 degrees out and I was topping out at 3000 rpm and 10 to 12 mph.
When we met I drove around while he sat on the back of the boat and diagnosed the issue.
All 6 carbs were sucking air. I have a slight sneeze which he said was an air leak. With the air box and housing off the boat took off straight up to 5500 rpm and got up to 32 mph with the motor trimmed all the way down. (I didn't get a chance to play much since he was sitting on the back of the boat). This was done with the 13 prop on. Hopefully I get similar results with the 15 or 17.
He held the air box up over the carbs and we tried again and only got up to 3000 rpm.
So it seems issue is defiantly that at this altitude the air housing isn’t letting enough air in for the motor to run. I guess that's why the plugs are fouling so fast.
Has anyone ever heard of cutting more holes or expanding the size of the current holes in the air box?
Does this information actually point to something besides the air box?

The mechanic took the air box back to his shop to check on drilling or expanding the holes so I didn’t get to look at the construction of it. I have no idea how it works.
With the Hatch on the motor and no air box it still runs great but not as good as with the hatch off and no air box.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Your carbs need to be re-jetted to work at the altitude your at. This information is in your manual and the mech should have known it.

I took the boat out agian today and ran it without the airbox but the hatch was on the motor.

It ran great. I have a 13x15.5 prop on and had to back off the throttle to keep the RPM's under 5500.

Since it runs to good with less air restriction to the carbs do you still think I need to jet the carbs or should I alter the airbox to allow for more airflow. Next time out I'm going to try my 15x15.5 prop.
