Hi I have a johnson sea-horse 20hp only number i can find is on top of pull start case no:387659
the pull start rope was broken and now (2years down line)i want to replace, the pull start is dismantled Help!! how do i put the string and spring back to-gether? the spring looks as if it doubles back on its self? the engine still runs fine but awkward to start withought the starting assembly

It might help someone to advise you if you can identify the year. the model number should be on a plate on the transom bracket and it may also be on a core plug on the engine.

probably you would have been able to replace the cord without dismantling the whole thing and letting the spring escape.

I doubt if the spring doubles back on itself.

Typical starter shown HERE Actually of one from a 20hp but from the mid 1980s but all the ones I checked looked pretty much the same

The parts list may tell you the correct length of the cord (68¾" in this one)but you'll need a manual to tell you how many turns to wind up the spring before fitting the cord.

Basically I think you will have to get it all back together with the spring in place >>> that's the fun bit <<<<< wind the spring up but not quite fully then while holding it with one pair of hands fit the cord with the other pair and then let the spring wind the cord in.

Difficult to do single handed and b**dy near impossible if SWMBO helps.
