Let me start by saying I know very little about outboards, so need help. I was given a 1991 4hp twin 2 stroke motor which had not been started for 5 years. I have got it going but have been told it must pump water to cool engine. I have removed gearbox and checked impeller which seems ok. I can see where the water is sucked in, but where does it exit from the engine? I have been told it should exit in a constant stream like a tap. HELP

A good item to read if you have an engine that has been idle for a while or is simply new to you is THIS ONE on the iBoats forums

I would not have put the old impeller back it even if it looked OK, its been scrunched up in there for long enough.

Cooling water simply goes back down the inside of the leg and leaves under water with the exhaust gases.
As far as I can see there is no cooling water tell tale, aka "pee hole", on this model but you should see some water, just a few drops or a mist being blown out out the exhaust relief holes on the leg.

Make sure it is not overheating by feeling the temperature of the cylinder head. You should be able to touch it and keep a finger on there for a couple of seconds or so depending on how sensitive your fingers are, A splash of water on there should not sizzle.

Fuel by the way is a 50:1 mix using a TCW3 specification 2 stroke outboard engine oil.

Plugs recommended are Champion QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030"

You dont say what the model number is but there two versions. A deluxe version with FNR gears, an remote fuel tank and a more grown up apearance than the basic version, which had no reverse gear, and either an internal fuel tank or a remote tank.
Both were available as standard or long shaft models

Thanks for your comments, at last I know that the pump is ok. I will change the impeller, when I find a source of spares. Where do you get your spares from? As you are knowledgable on Evinrudes, I hope you can answer some further questions. If there is no water telltale, how would you in general running, know your impeller had failed before the engine seizes? What is gearbox oil spec? With full tank what is the best way to transport in boot of car without fuel leaking out? Many thanks for your help
