So I blew the main fuse (20 amp) doing the quick test on my horn by grounding the connection to the block. Initially there were sparks (small) but we held it in place for a while and fuse blew. Connections at horn are 2 purple wire and a tan wire. Horn never sounded. Anything else to check or is horn D.O.A. ? |

Is that a plastic horn that has a built in black ground wire, OR is it the older metal horn that simply has two push on type connectors? |

If I have to choose between the 2, I'd say the older metal horn. It has a black plastic cover though and the wires seemed to be soldered on. I believe something else was connected. Right now just the 2 purples and 1 tan are connected. |

That comes across as the quite old type green metal horn. This type horn will never beep when you turn the key to the ON position. Your explanation of the problem (blowing the fuse) indicates that the metal horn is shorted out internally. I should have asked for the model number of your engine. What is it? If unknown.... what make, year, and hp is it? |

This might be relevant. I had something that was involved with the ignition harness (it is loose) that I couldn't identify. I think I have a clue now. It is a Cole Hersee black box (say 3" x 2.25" x 1") with 2 wires coming out. If I remember ... a gray wire and a black wire with silver stripes but I could be wrong. I will check today. Cole Hersee website indicates it is some kind of warning device. Do they work together ? Did the horn not work so someone connected this ? is it for some other warning ? |

David.... Received your email. A used horn at $15 or $20 might be a good deal BUT only if you really know the seller, there is trust in both directions, and he will take your word if the horn fails in a short time or is faulty and replace it if need be. Otherwise, bite the bullet and pay the outrageous price for a new one. The two part numbers you supplied........ The one you need is #585992. The other numberm 585993 supersedes up to the above number of 585992. |

Any idea what that Cole Hersee warning box (remembered that it connects to the back of the horn, at least black/silver wire)? Do you think I'll need it with a new horn ? Any test I can do to test a used horn for worthiness ? Resistance ? $77 is bogus for the horn. thanks |
