OMC shows

1) valve body
2) T-stat
3) cork
4) gasket DRL (???)
5) adaptor

Sierra shows (BTW this looks right to me)

1) valve body
2) cork
3) T-stat
4) gasket DRL
5) adaptor

Ezeke on iboats swears

1) valve body
2) cork
3) gasket DRL
4) T-stat
5) adaptor

Which one is right ???

I dont really know but I think I'd agree with you too.

You need a seal between the flange on the thermostat and the valve body. I assume there must be a recess for it to fit into!

There is but the cork fits in there and then there is no more recess but actually a rise.
