Mr. Joe/ JWB, I've been using the Walmart Supertech Marine 80W-90 lower unit gear lube (APL GL-5) in my 1975 50 HP Johnson. You guys will know this is not an electric/solenoid shift lower unit. Page 2-4 of my 1975 Johnson Outboards Service Manual for this engine advises to use OMC Premium Blend Gear Lube and if not available to use GM Dextron Transmission Fluid. I'm thinking that 80W-90 is the correct weight and that the Dextron Tranny Fluid would be to thin. Am I OK with 80-90 weight gear lube? |

yep....not sure why it states such thin fluid,ur correct,in that,it is a straight mech shift...since they had just come off the elect/hydr shift units, maybe, they had an affinity towards the thinner fluid..the correct fluid, would be the reg hypoid 80/90 that u r trying to use...u r just fine w/the supertech. |

Thank you JWB for your comments. I called my dealer back home and the fella on the phone asked a mechanic who advised that my 1975 50 HP has a pump in the lower unit that requires the lighter weight gear lube. My motor is probably older than the guy who answered my question. I'm going with JWB's a response and will review my manual to be sure that i don't have that pump. |
