My Johnson outboard is still overheating even though I've installed a new impeller (and the old one looked in good condition). I have two questions I need help on...
1) At what location is the cooling water expelled on this outboard? I thought it came out at the 8 toothpick sized exhaust holes about halfway up from the bottom but only a VERY light spray blows out there.
2) After pulling off the bottom, I have put both suction and air pressure at the end of the 1/4" copper water uptake tube just above the impeller housing thinking it may be stopped up. When I use the air pressure, I can not feel any air outgo anywhere! Does this mean a blockage and where do I go from here? Thanks...Larry

You should remove the side cover (part no. 25 of the joined slide) to look at the water circuit input to the motor...my 4,5 hp 1984 had an obstruction to the 11/64'' inlet hole to the motor...from there, you should be able to test for air circulation from the inlet and to the motor...

Hi all im new to this site. I also have a 69 6hp that is over heating. i have removed the power head and cylender head. Cleaned all visable galleries out. I did find a blockage under the thermstat gasket in the by pass area will run it without the thermosat for a bit.
how important is it to remove the exhaust plate as my screw are a bit so so.
i also had frozen transom clamps. i put the oxy tourch on them to get them hot. worked a treat.
any othe r areas i need to check. water pump is ok.
thanks
veno

I have just finished rebuilding my 6hp johno . I cleaned out evry water way and found one port that ran between the 2 cylenders. I used a long series drill bit of about 1/8 diam by hand to open it up. it runs from the exhaust side through to the inlet side. I then blew it out with air to check all water ways were clear. I retuned the motor and now it runs cold and idles well at very low reves. Next I will reintall the thermostat and see if it runs a bit warmer. I used "never seize" on all threads to protect againts future corosion. It has been a rewarding project and now need to find a small hul to hang it on.
