My 1971 Johnson Seahorse 6 hp 6R71G suddenly starting running hot at full throttle and died. The engine was very hot to the touch. There used to be a fine mist coming out of the above water line exhaust port and there doesn't seem to be any water coming out now. I belive there is a secondary water port outlet below the water line. I was afraid the motor seized but after it cooled it started with some extra pulls and will run for a while at idle before conking out. It normally starts on half a pull but now will restart on multiple pulls and conks out when it warms up. Does this sound like the impeller and/or water pump or something else? I didn't note anything stuck in the water inlet but I was leaving the cottage and had no time for a thorough inspection. Any suggestions, instructions, diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. My bro is going up north this weekend. He's not too mechanically inclined and he's blaming me for ruining his fishing weekend and I said I'd try to get some more info. Thanks fellas.

First suspicion would be the water pump especially if the impeller has not been changed recently.

There could of course be an obstruction somewhere or the water passages may have corroded or scaled up

Drop the LU off to replace the pump impeller and why it is off make sure you can get a good water flow with a hose connected to the water tube.
Take the thermostat out while you do that and check that it opens as well.

I suspect that it seized and from what you say about requiring multiple pulls to start has suffered some serious damage. A compression check may confirm that.

A fair bit of investigation may be required to determine how badly it is damaged.

Thanks Vics. Would it start and run smoothly for a while like it does if it seized? I thought if it seized it would be stuck in place and you couldn't turn it over.
Also, can you advise what is an exeptable compression range for this motor?

hi, if it's heat seized, it will probably cool down and run quite well again, until it gets hot, expands and seizes again..
dont know your engine but my suzuki was about 130psi.. my car is about 150psi etc.. main thing is all cylinders need to be have close readings to each other, and definately over 100psi

As John G says you should get readings within 10%, 15% at the most, of each other.

As for acceptable readings; yes over 100 would be good, might get away with anything over 80.

Pull it over (both plugs out) several times and record the maximum figure. You wont get such a high figure for a pull start as you will for an electric start. Nor will you get readings on a 2 stroke as high as you will on a 4 stroke.
