I have a johnson 6 , bought it 2 weeks ago and today I tried it on my boat. It works ok but it just doesn't have any power. I have a 3 hp motor that goes twice as fast. I think maybe the electricity is the problem but im not sure.

So any help would be great.

It sounds like it is running on one piston. Probably a spark issue.

ck ur spark,and compression,...if ok,clean/rebuild carb,new wtr imp,lower unit oil,and a new fuel pump,never hurts,as its prob been there many,many yrs.a thorough tune up,would be advised,as well.

If all that doesn't do it, you may have a crank seal problem. But do all the spark/ compression fuel test first. They come right out with a small drill and 2 little screws. Grab the screws and walk the seal out. Put the new one in with sealer and a socket or pipe. Lip towards the piston.

Hope it's easier than that.

a think tony is right it ran in a tank good with lot of power but when i started it on the boat it just wasnt getting the power from it. So im going to check that today.

Carb was cleaned and its ok so thats not a problem.

The fuel pump isnt a johnson its a bing taken from an tomos outboard and made to fit but a dont think thats the problem (i changed some critical parts on it and cleandet it good ) because the carb is full of gas.

New impeller is in and new oil in the lower unit.

So im going to chek the sparks today and the compression if a get the gauge.

And can somebody tell me how to make the tool for removing the flywheel.

"can somebody tell me how to make the tool for removing the flywheel"

You will need what is known as a "Harmonic Balance puller" (dunno why) which bolts onto the flywheel , see the tapped holes there? with high tensile (Grade 8 ??) bolts.

If you can make something good for you but otherwise hire one.

BTW you have not told us the year (or model number) of this engine

Be careful with how deep into the flywheel you screw the puller bolts. The coils are right there and you can stab them.

The term "Harmonic balancer" comes from the automotive trade. It is a balance weight on the front of an auto motor and caries the primary drive pulley to all the accessories like power steering/ AC/alternator and water pump, but works great for a flywheel.

I am dealing with a similar issue w my Johnson 10. No power. Gets about 5 MPH pushing a 14 ft john boat.

Issue 1: Model # is FD-13 R, but i could not find that model number on the reference list for manuels. Any ideas?

Issue 2: Checked plugs. One is fine and clean, the other does not spark and has black buildup. Put good plug on the wire and discovered the wire is bad. How do I get the flywheel off to access the wire?

I need to know the year and model first so I can find a manuel. Any help would be great!
