Sorry in advance for this dumb question...
But when I took the thermostat out, the pressure relief valve fell out...I noticed it has one side beveled and the other flat...( I have looked at many diagrams, but none are clear enough for me to be sure)...
I put it back with the beveled side toward the head/seal... would that be correct?...Overheating at high rpm...

My 70hp '77 has the bevelled side towards the head which makes sense

If not mistaken, the spring only fits on one side of the valve, unless You use force!

Thanks, that makes me feel better, I was assuming that the pressure would be coming from the head side....

Thanks, I didn't use any force with it, but after seeing the crud in the water pump, think I will remove the head cover again and clean the water jackets a little, I'll recheck it..

As Morten states, the spring will only go on one way, so the beveled side faces the rubber grommet in the head.
