here's my problem !
check engine light comes on and stays on when I put some load (2500 rpm) on the engine and knocks it down to 1200 rpm.
we drained some fuel out of tank to see if water in tank --- no water. pee stream appears to be ok !
}fuel problem ? water pump problem ? Help !! one more thing -- tach is not working --- happened about same time this problem occurred ! coincidence ? connection ?
thanks for your help !

The engine is going into SLOW mode. The check engine light means that there is a code that will tell what is wrong. If you want more information I will check my book to give you an idea of what it might be but it's hard to say for sure without hooking it up to the software.

at my last count,i believe there are 33 things, that could set off ck eng lite on a ficht..that is an expensive eng, that cant normally be repaired in the backyard..i suggest u take to a dealer.

jwb might be right but i only see 3 things that cause SLOW mode with check engine light.
code 17-alternator voltage below expected range
code 18-alternator voltage above expected range
code 25- EMM sensor circuit above expected range
I am no expert but these things are pretty simple to check and thought this might help.

I agree with shea - but I too am no expert.
However, I just received my E/J Outboard Repair Manual and the 3 things you mention appear to be what ails my motor.
If not then it appears to be a fuel issue which I will need to explore. In any event I plan on having a dealer hook up the diagnostic software and see what the service codes show. Thanks for your help !
Anyone else with an opinion please let me know.
Thanks to all.
