I posted the post below back in April. I have been very busy with other hobbies and activities (racing stock cars and planning a wedding) but finally got back to the boat. I found and fixed the problem. I chased all the fuel lines and eventually found a loose hose on the line that goes into the fuel tank. I had to remove the fitting that screwed into the tank to find it. The plastic hose that pressed onto that fitting was loose. I cut 1/2" off the top, pushed it back on and solved my fuel supply problem. It was sucking air and running the float bowls empty while under power. In addition to the fuel supply problem, I had an electrical problem as well. While under power on the lake, I put a timing light on each coil. I found one that was bad. I moved that coil to another position to make sure it was the coil. The problem followed the coil. I replaced the coil and fixed the fuel line in the tank and my problem is now solved. I have since ordered 3 more new coils and with them, will have brand new ones on all 4 cyl. PROBLEM SOLVED! A couple of things I learned that I would like to pass on... 1. The advice on this forum is very helpful but sometimes a bit too complex for the problem. Do not dismiss any advice given on this board. It is free and has every intention of helping. 2. Never suck on the vent tube for your gas tank. There may be a small bee's nest in there that could surprise you.. If there is not, the fuel vapor that goes into your lungs will really make you feel weird.... 3. When trying to fix your problem, start with the easiest and least expensive option first. Eliminate those BEFORE you jump to the more expensive and complex solutions. I fixed my problem for around $120.00 and did it all myself and in the driveway. ORIGINAL POST from April 2009: I have a 85 Evinrude 140HP V4 outboard. I have had a surging/sputtering/cutting out problem since I got the boat/motor 2 years ago. It started out as a very slight sputter that would last for only a second 2 years ago and has progressively gotten worse. It starts great, idles prefectly and runs super at low RPM (prior to going on plane). If I hold the engine about 1/3 throttle, it will run most of the day without issue. 1/2 throttle or 3500 to 4000 rpm, it will run for about 2 minutes and then act like it runs out of fuel, sputter and the RPMs drop like it put it into neutral. If I pull back on the throttle, it stays running most of the time and takes about a minute for the motor to "compose" itself and then we can take off again. The more demand I make for fuel, the more frequent these sputter cycles happen. I went thru this cycle more than 20 times yesterday. I have replaced the spark plugs and checked the carbs for leaks. The opaque fuel bowl prior to the VRO is full when this happens and the bulb is still firm. There are no fuel leaks that I can see. Holding in the choke while this is happening has no affect, neither does feathering the throttle. Sorry for the long post but I am in dire need of serious help. Anything would be appreciated. Thank you. Terry |
