This motor(1968 johnson 100hp electramatic) has been used very little since new. it has been in storage for the past 15 years. It needs a new wiring harnes because the wires are frayed and probably a new water pump and impeller. How hard are these to change and what other problems may I encounter? Is this a good engine? I was given this boat and motor by the original owner so I have no money tied up in it yet. The boat and motor look showroom new. |

To change the water pump, it will be necessary to disconnect the two wires that lead to the lower unit, then drop the lower unit to gain access to the water pump. How difficult it may be depends on ones mechanical expertise.
In 1968, OMC took on a different outfit to make its wiring harnesses etc which was a big mistake. The insulation that year was such poor quaity that in a very short time, the insulation cracked and fell away.... as you have found out. To patch the wiring is dangerous as "all" of it is faulty and will crack away revealing bare wires throughout.
I have found it best to remove the harness, lay it down in its original configuration on a piece of plywood, keeping it where it belongs by having finishing nails on each side of the harness where needed, then replacing one wire at a time with the same color and gauge along with the proper end terminals.
Time consuming, yes.... but when you're finished, you have a wiring harness that is safe and will last for years. |
