I have a 90 horse johnson 1990, have owned it since day one (actually my dads boat) and the last few years it has been getting harder to start.. I found out that the starter had a dead spot so had the redone.. Now it take forever to start either warm or cold, kinda gets worse when it is warmed up.. also to keep it idleing need to bump up the power to about 1000 rpm to keep it running ok.. I take care of it in the off season by foggin and stable, (the usual stuff) did not know if the hard starting is common or if it would be a fuel issue.. I have read places in different forums when people suggest water getting in one of the cyclinders.. any help would be great,, going up next weekend to work on it.. |

You MUST start your trouble shooting with a compression test----followed by a check that you have spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" on each cylinder----Report the results. |

I also have 1990 johnson 90 hp and am also the original owner. I have had the same problem. It won't idle below 1200 rpm's, It is hard to start after sitting for a few hours. I rebuilt the carbs and it was no help. The compression is 115 to 120 psi on all four cylinders. What happens is when you go to start it it fires then the starter disengages and it dies. The problem is water in one or two cylinders, most likley you have a bad head gasket on one head.If your compression is good on all cylinders try to start the enging and run it a while then let it idle down and stall. Quickley remove all of the spark plugs and look at them. Sometimes you will water on the ones that caused the engine to die. Also you might see steam coming out of the plug hole. If you can't tell by any of these methods pull the heads. It will be very obvious which one is leaking. the head will be very clean with almost no carbon. I have pulled mine off twice and replaced the head gasket, cleaned the head w/400 wet/dry sand paper on a piece of glass but I continue to have the same problem. I just picked a new head gasket this week. This time I am going to take the head to the machine shop and have it milled to clean it up. I think that should solve the problem. |

Demmer.... If you have compression and spark, remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetors. They do gradually become clogged, fouled, and gummed. Be sure to manually clean the four high speed jets that are located in the bottom center of the float chambers.... use a piece of single strand wire. ok sounds good, i am going to get a compression tester this week, and then once i get up to the cabin i will be checking for spark.. if that is good i will then go to the carbs for probably some much needed tlc.. it is amazing what a little mx will do to a motor.. my brother had the same issue with running like crap, cleaned up the carbs and it runs better then when he got it.. |
