| 1980 johnson 9.9 running problem |

I have a 1980 johnson 9.9 outboard it will run for 10 min or so then shuts off it will restart after it sits a while like an hour or so also there appears to be steam coming from tell tale before it shuts off there is water coming from tell tale hole i am replacing waterpump any way and goin to rebuild carb any other ideas |

check compression/spark....esp,to see that u dont have a blown hd gasket...and do what u mentioned. |

I dont mean to argue with JB but I'd sure pull that Thermostat and see if the overheating problem went away before I'd do anything more serious. |

Due to the design of pump and impeller in these engines, they need a new impeller close to every year. If the original thermostat still installed, pull down the cover and replace it. To get down the cover for the thermostat, You will have to remove the rear cover latch first, unless You want to take off the head and change the gasket at the same time. |
