I recently purchased an '84 Johnson 6hp long shaft. I want to use it for trolling and as a back-up for my inboard engine. Like most used items, it's required a little work to get it ship shape.
I had to replace the carb. float bowl and gasket because someone overtorqued the screws and deformed the original bowl.
Need help and have a couple of questions:
1) What is the correct fuel mix for this model? There is a decal just above the fuel intake harness indicating 100/1, but everyone I've talked to says that's much too light a mixture. Any thoughts/ suggestions?
2) When started, I get an immediate stream from the tiny discharge hole, but the water never seems to get warm. Plus, there is very little water coming from the exhaust holes just below the cowling. Only a few drops at best. Could this be due to a faulty thermostat? How can I check? After a few minutes, the power head gets hot-to-touch, but I don't know (by feel) what the operating temp. should be.

Most people mix 50/1 unless they only idle the engine. If you only run at idle then 100/1 will suffice
If ever in question replace the impeller/water pump. I would replace it every 2 years, 3 at the most and I would go ahead and replace the thermostat now too. Prevention is cheap and engines need water to cool. |
