Just got a 6hp seahorse motor (1976?) and cant figure out what I am doing wrong. Motor starts up fine and idles OK but I cant get it to 'shift' into gear and go. The propeller turns freely by hand and is not sticking or bound up. Steering/Throttle handle seems to be moving freely and working ok. I can turn the throttle conter-clockwise twords 'fast' and get the motor to rev up but when I turn it back clockwise to 'shift' it dies. I hope I am missing something as the person that I got it from said it was working fine. Not to mention this is my first 2 cycle outboard so I assume it is user error. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Adam, the lettering on the throttle is mostly to tell you not to shift into gear at anything much above idle. The throttle lever is not combined with the shift. There should be a seperate lever on the engine to shift the gearcase. Probably on the starboard side of the motor

Checked the propshaft drive pin???? Checked to see that it has a strong spark at each cylinder?

Thanks for the responses! I was able to touch base with the original owner and it was a matter of locating the lever for shifing the gearcase. It was a bright red handle on the side of the motor that I assumed was for helping to carry the motor. Doh!
