Just got my first boat. It is a 1981 Astroglass 16ft bass/ski boat. Has a 1979 Evinrude 85hp outboard model 85999R. The problem is on take off the front end comes up and is real slow to get up enough speed to level out. I was told the prop may be wrong for the boat. Any ideas? There is no markings on the prop to see what it is. |

First you must make sure that the engine itself is okay.
Compression should be 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Is it?
With all of the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 1/4" gap on that model with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Does it?
If the above tests prove those areas to be okay, then either you have the engine trimmed wrong (set too far back on the reverse lock rod). Looking at the boat on a trailer from a side view, the cavitation plate just above the propeller should be on the same plane (parallel) with the bottom of the boat..... OR
The carburetors are fouled causing the engine to run lean, in which case, they would need to be removed, cleaned, and rebuilt with complete carburetor kits..... OR
The propeller, as you suspect, could be a bad match for the boat. The diameter and pitch numbers would be on the face of the propeller in back of the prop nut and spacer assembly. If they're there, what are the numbers?

Borrowed a prop off a friends boat with same motor. Made a huge differance. Boat leveled out quick. Did check compression. All cylinders were at 130. |
