I have a 87 Johnson 50 hp and you ether have forward or reverse I adjusted the shifting linkage but theres no happy mediam. the thing is with the motor off I can put it in reverse and the prop is locked in and I can put in forward and the prop is locked in.What else should I be looking for I'm lost. |

poss a control box prob,or replacement and adjustment of shift cables.Also,it is poss that u need a few parts in lower unit...ck your LU oil for water and excessive metal shavings. |

That lower unit is notorious for not being up to the task.The parts are known to fail ( breakage of clutch and pinion) while at full throttle.So what is the history on it.Did you just buy this motor? was any work done on it recently?What happened to it?? |

I bought the boat last december the guy said it ran fine reverse was a little tuchy but I replaced the lower end unit oil and it looked the same as other lower unit oil I have changed no metal in it |

the guy I got the boat from said no work had been done. the last time he and some guys I work with took it out it ran fine but he had not used it last summer. |
