Is the motor running or is someone turning the propeller shaft when you try to shift????If bot you are making mistakes. |

The engine numbers are on the powerhead....stamped on an unpainted aluminum welch plug located on the top or side of the powerhead...The plug is approximately the size of a quarter. These numbers will identify the motor as to size and year. Has anyone checked the gear oil in the lower unit??? How about the grease fitting on the shift lever shaft??? |

It is a 1972...The most common cause of binding is lack of lubrication on the shift lever shaft. I assume you have greased the fitting with marine grease and the grease oozed out. The lever should move easily. There are also some adjustments on the shift lever itself. Does the lever move with difficulty at all throttle openings??? A manual is available on this site or at most marinas...it is a good investment and can save a lot of time and money if you intend to do any of the work yourself |
