Carlo.... Perhaps engines sell for a lot more in Canada than they do here (Florida). $450.00 for a 45 year old 40hp engine seems a little steep to me. Back in 1963, that engine, brand new, sold for about $900.00 US.

However, we'll do what we can do online. You'll need to describe in detail exactly what kind of problem you're having.

Is it manual start, electric start, manual shift, electric shift? What is the compression? Do you have spark on both cylinders? On that model, the spark should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real snap. Does it?

Spark plugs can be either Champion J6C or J4C plugs, gapped at .030.

Points should be set as follows:

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubber portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

When time permits, visit my store at: http://stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store

Note: THe flywheel nut must be torqued to 105 foot pounds. Anything less will result in a sheared flywheel key (out of time).

Let us know what kind of problem you're having.
