I have a 4 hp 2 stroke outboard and recently had a blockage in the cooling system. I took it apart, cleaned the salt from the thermostat, and the chamber behind it around the cylinder. When I started it up, the tell-tale did not show water immediately but after a minute, there was a strong flow. I presume the thermostat had opened by then. Should the water flow at all times or only when it is warmed up a bit? Is there a channel which by-passes the thermostat and allows a constant flow and if so, where is it inside the engine so that I can check it is clear? Thank you.
