Will not go over 2000 rpms

Hello, I have a 1996 24ft Cuddy Cabin. It has a 5.7 mercruiser with a 2 barrell carb. I have replaced the following: fuel pump, installed electric, rebuilt carb. replaced coil and all plugs and wires. No starting problems at all. When out of gear idels fine, and will rev up with no problems. Once I put in gear I can not plane and if I push full throttle I can get not more than 2000 rpms, today it did get plained out once and got 3000 rpms for just a little bit. Started loosing power and it started detonating. Timing was just set when I replaced the coil. I have it set at 24 advance. I got hosed last year by a bad mechanic that was supposed to have placed a HEI destribitor in the boat due to the thunderbolt being bad. Come to find out it is not a marine distribitor nor HEI. Could this be my problem, anything else to check? thanks

Yes, is your problem when you say 24 advance is that at idle... Just take to Dealer and get it fits right... in the long run will be lest money
I bet it's automobile type, which is very unsafe....

ok - not marine hei it has a vacuum advance won't work, you need mechanical advance dist.
