water pump replace evinrude 40 hp

Routine water pump replacement. all assembled and no water comes up to the motor. dropped lower unit to check pump, found that water tube grommet was not sealing. the grommet is to short. has anyone else run into this problem and how did you resolve the issue?

Have never seen a GROMMET that was too short.----How does the new grommet compare with the old one ?-----There must be more to this story.-----Was it pumping ok before your work ?------Did you use factory parts ?----A complete kit ?----Part number and source of your parts ?

Wasn't getting flow and overheating. Used Sierra 18-3454. Tossed old parts out before I checked ougt the new pump. Bought this from a guy that just had the pump replaced.
 
Yes I know that there is no copper water tube on a 1989 model.----Just order a new grommet and you will be fine.------Have to ask, the drive key for the impeller is in place ?
