I was trying to find the year of a Yamaha the other day.
I was on boats.net, and their listing is by model#, but you need the year which I didn't have.

Even on Yamaha website, you can find it by model BUT it still doesn't show the year.

I emailed boats.net and was sent this link.

Using the actual VIN of the engine, which is right below the model#, you can easily use the chart finding the 10th digit.
Just remember, every 30 years the 10th digit gets reused.

I was looking up 6BXS1024286, which turns out to be a 2008.

If information was obtained from webbikeworld, perhaps Yamaha outboard motors are being confused with Yamaha motor cycles.

Yamaha outboard motors don't have VIN's. They have what Yamaha refers to as a Primary Identification Identity. PID.

The PID is comprised of three fields. First field is the model code. Second field is the shaft length. Third field is the serial number.

Yamaha PID 6BXS 1024286 is a 2012 production year motor.
