Trim Cylinder Repair

I'm new to out drives. I have an issue with both my trim cylinders, the cap on the top of the trim cylinder the clip keeps coming off and the washer and parts under it on the pistons come out when the drive goes up. I have attached pictures. The previous owner said he put a little epoxy on them to keep them in. I would like to fix it right. I'm thinking I need to replace the locking ring clips. I see a kit online with the o rings and parts needed. I know I will need a spanner wrench to remove the cap. Does any one have the instructions to do this? How does the top piece come off the rod? I have a pretty good mechanical ability and not afraid to give it a try. I got all winter to play. Any help would be appreciated.

What year is the outdrive and associated parts???

Not clear by the pictures......

The out drive is 1983 alpha the trim cylinders are 98703 and 98704. As far as I know all the part are the same year.

How does the top piece come off the rod?

Ayuh,.... It don't,.... Ya start from the Other end...
