" Bought a 1989 156 Cadorette with a 1975 Mercury 850 battery CD ignition - not orginal motor for this Boat. Tach has five wire harness plug, remote control has three wire plug. Tach has plastic cap on back numbered 1,2,3,4 and has a sticker saying for 12 pole alternator input only. Can I wire this tach to my control box and make it work? Control box has black, brown and white wires. Tach harness has purple, black, grey, brown and beige wires.

You should able to make that tach work, but at this time I'm not sure how you would have to wire it.
